Digital File Licensing
What is Digital File Licensing? Many people get confused about who owns the images that are created and what you as the client are allowed to do with them. Here’s the short version of how commercial photography and copyright works:
The client pays the photographer to create images (I call this the Creative Fee). Then you also pay for permission to use those images for your business (Digital File Licensing). The photographer retains the copyright to the image, but you get a license to use them. Depending on how you plan use the image, the cost for the rights to use the photos can vary. For a small business only posting the images to social media, you can expect a smaller licensing fee. A national company using the images for billboards and TV ad campaigns can expect to pay a higher licensing fee.
Digital file licensing starts at $40 per image. Discounts apply when a larger quantity of images is purchased.
